The Power of Powder Blue

August 31, 2010 - One Response

I love the way powder blue calms the soul. There’s something about it that makes it utterly tranquil, and that’s a positive quality to have. Don’t you agree? That’s probably why I had a hoot and holler of a time gathering up all these powder blue items. While I hope you enjoy looking at these items as much as I did, I do pray you don’t salivate as much. That’s just not very lady like!

Instant Collections Yield Instant Gratification

August 26, 2010 - 4 Responses

There’s something ultra satisfying about an instant collection of vintage goodies. Perhaps it’s the carefully composed and well thought-out way a seller compiled a set of similar or complementary items. Perhaps it’s the ease of it all. Whatever the reasoning, I’m a definite sucker for instant sets and collections to adorn my home with. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re tempted by the following!

Lingerie may be a wise investment

March 12, 2010 - Leave a Response

Bonjour, mi amor! I’m not going to fib: one of my guilty pleasures is looking at fabulous lingerie. Whether it’s a bodacious corset, shimmery satin camisole or a pair of frilly undies, I’m bound to turn my eyes and drool a little bit. Too bad I don’t have all the money in the world to spend on such pretty undergarments. Mayhaps you can find a few in this bunch to spend your pennies on, though.

The Story of Amber // TheVintageVanity

February 15, 2010 - One Response

Why, hi there! Today on Wendy’s Gem’s we have a pretty feature. This is the story of Amber, owner of Ety’s Vintage Vanity. Enjoy!

  • Tell Wendy’s Gems about yourself. Family and friends are a huge part of my life. I love to laugh…a lot. I love fashion, art museums, theater, architecture, vintage clothing and accessories and antiques. I love to paint, draw and obviously make jewelry. I’m eager to learn how to sew, sculpt pottery and design clothing. I love music…almost any genre. I love the outdoors…camping, hiking, swimming, and most every sport (volleyball being my favorite). I love reality TV…” [my name is Amber and I am a reality TV junkie" - LOL]. I’m a magazine junkie too…seriously, I could spend a full day flipping through all sorts of magazines. My favorite place to visit is downtown Charleston, SC…it’s a city filled with great architecture and history. I am totally open minded and would try almost anything.
  • What’s the inspiration behind your jewelry? I’ve always been amazed with old style architecture and antiques, thanks to my mother. Combine that with my love of fashion and the environmentally conscious city that I live in and…(drum roll, please)…The Vintage Vanity is born. I use vintage and reused jewelry pieces to create wearable art.
  • When did you begin crafting jewelry? I started creating jewelry pieces1-1/2 years ago . However, I started seriously focusing on creating my jewelry about 8 months ago.
  • What’s your favorite flavor of bubblegum and why? Bubblegum flavor as in Bazooka Joe bubblegum. Original and classic. I guess I’m a purist when it comes to bubblegum flavors.
  • What color describes your personality best? Although I wear a lot of black, the color that best describes my personality is periwinkle. Unique, soft hued (shy) but with an edge, gentle, careful, imaginative, peaceful, amiable, easy going, calm, creative…

I Spy Something Pink

February 4, 2010 - 2 Responses

For hundreds of years, the human race has been obsessed with color. Some say that certain colors have a weight; some say they evoke memories of long time past. Others prefer not to study the color, but to instead enjoy it. Whether you’re an artist, an art-appreciator, a poet, a jeweler, a pessimist or simply a fan of life, one thing remains the same: color has power. Now, after a lead like that you’d expect me to choose a hue like red, black or violent gray, wouldn’t you? Well, I’m not going to. I’m choosing pink. Because I like pink. And pink, in my eyes, is irrefutably divine.

by Solanah

“This pretty dress from the 1960s is just what your spring wardrobe needs, perfect to accessorize up or down. Made from patterned silk it has long cuffed sleeves and a mandarin like collar. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces…they’re all equally exciting. But whatever happened to the brooch? It may sound a bit old fashioned, but don’t let that distract you from their awesomeness. Cats and Rabbits Would Reside in Fancy Little Houses

…And be dressed in shoes and hats and trousers! Oh, Alice in Wonderland – you’ve inspired many, many artists. And with the upcoming Tim Burton movie (featuring a handsome Johnny Depp), you’re becoming all the rage. Since I’ve got a mini obsession with Alice (who doesn’t, really?), I decided to search high and low to find some of the best Wonderland-themed goodies. My treat, to you.

by babastudioPrague

Our vivid satin prints are very high quality – rich colours, no running, no fading and fully dry-cleanable. We do every one ourselves and take great care to make them detailed and lush.  In this bag we’ve combined an amazing two-tone copper pure silk with a carefully restored “Alice in Wonderland” picture by Arthur Rackham (taken from an original late 19th century edition). Finished with hand-woven handles – see more below – and copper metallic cording. A gem of a bag.

Alice is standing next to him. The text is in Hebrew and is used to create a pattern, you don’t need to be able to read it – it looks cool!”

by savoytruffles

The Alice fascinator takes its name from the heroine of the much beloved children’s story Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. A remarkable coming of age tale, Alice makes unlikely friends with unforgettable characters such as the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, and the Cheshire Cat, and learns through the course of her journey that she is more grown-up and brave than she had ever before imagined. Although it was originally published in 1865, this amazing story is as relevant and inspirational now as it ever was.”

‘Oh my ears and whiskers, how late it’s getting!’ I don’t know about you, but many days, I feel a bit like the White Rabbit. This is a print of my original mixed media piece made with acrylic paint, paper collage, ink, stamping, and colored pencil.

by carrytales

It was all very well to say `Drink me,’ but the wise little Alice was not going to do that in a hurry. `No, I’ll look first,’ she said, `and see whether it’s marked “poison” or not’. However, this bottle was not marked `poison,’ so Alice ventured to taste it, and finding it very nice, (it had, in fact, a sort of mixed flavour of cherry-tart, custard, pine-apple, roast turkey, toffee, and hot buttered toast,) she very soon finished it off.”

This listing is for a signed 4 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ PRINT on 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ heavy matte photo paper of Alice and the Caterpillar. They will arrive in a protected envelope via First Class Mail. More on Alice: Although it is not common knowledge, Alice continued to return to Wonderland well into adulthood. Apparently, once one has been immersed in that caliber of strangeness, it’s hard not to go back. Here Alice is pictured having a chat and a spot of tea with her old friend, the Caterpillar, who, it turns out, is female and named Zanzibara. A small snail slithers over to offer a Hello.”
